Jonathan Ashbridge, Acting Chief Executive for the Barts and the London Trust reflected on the last six months. He said that since January 2001 there had been a stream of new directives - at a rate of 1.5 a day. Fundamental changes included improving the environment and a new licensing body for nursing from April 2002. This would include lay membership, and would bring anticipated developments in licensing specialist nurses and some ancillary workers, as well as creating common education standards for the four countries.
It would be 10 years before the new hospital would be completed so a ward refurbishment programme would start in a few months time.
The Royal London Hospital would become one of five centres in London for patients with severe injuries. The high-dependency beds have increased to 24 and a further 3 ITU beds are available. Nurse recruitment was good with 125 nurses starting in January, including 25 from overseas. The staff from the two Care of the Elderly wards at RLH are now managed by the Trust and from April 2002 the community midwives will also be managed by it.
