Brief history of the League
Miss Eva Luckes, Matron 1880-1919 wrote an annual letter to her nurses describing the hospital's year and giving details of both past and present staff. From that time 'The London's' nurses have always been closely linked together. In 1919, after the First World War when women were given the vote, State Registration for nurses was introduced. Miss Monk, who succeeded Miss Luckes as matron, saw the need for a professional association and in 1931 she founded The London Hospital League of Nurses.
A review of the first 50 years of The League by Dr Sheila Collins was written on the occasion of the 50th Annual General Meeting held on 25th April 1981.
The Constitution includes the functions of the League of Nurses.
